It was a privilege to build and donate a Wright Drum Co. Birdseye Maple Philharmonic snare to the Booneville, MS High School band program. The 14" x 6.5" maple ply shell is paired with a Pearl Philharmonic throw-off for strong tuning range and response. The Booneville Blue Devil Band has a rich tradition of excellence, and this custom snare is built to help define their sound for years to come.
Commissioned piece
Cajons are as fun to build as they are to play. This one was a commissioned build with full creative freedom. Solid mahogany and maple were used to deliver a warm, articulate sound that’s hard to match with ply construction.
First personal drum build
My first build for personal use was a 14" x 7" steam-bent curly maple snare. I chose steam bending to minimize glue and let the wood vibrate more freely for a natural, warm tone. Black nickel hardware keeps the focus on the figure in the maple.
